Description

Columbian Centinel, January 30, 1802, Boston: Front Page Coverage of Thomas Jefferson's "Mammoth Cheese" Incident Connected to Jefferson and the Separation of Church and State. An important documentation of one of the most curious events in Jefferson's tenure but with major political significance: The mammoth cheese incident occurred at the White House on January 1, 1802. It involved a gift of a "mammoth" wheel of cheese that weighed 1230 pounds by New England Baptists who were among the strongest advocates in the early Republic of the separation of church and state. The cheese was intended to show support for Jefferson's ideas on the separation between church and state. The event became national news. The event was a gesture of symbolic political and ideological support, and the very day Jefferson received this gift, he retired to the White House and penned one of the most famous letters in American political history on the "wall of separation between Church and State" that he then sent to the Danbury Baptists.

Includes a front-page printing of the full letter from the Cheshire Baptists describing their intentions on sending the cheese which specifically highlights the need to avoid all religious tests in the US government. It also includes the full letter of Jefferson's reply, concurring with the opinions of the Cheshire Baptist's on the division between church and state. Also includes an editorial by the Columbian Centinel on the event.
Jefferson's letter printed here states in part: "I CONCUR WITH YOU....THAT THE CONSTITUTION... IS A CHARTER OF AUTHORITIES AND DUTIES... AND AMONG ITS MOST PRECIOUS PROVISIONS... IS THE PROHIBITION OF RELIGIOUS TESTS..."

Although the news of the "Mammoth Cheese" incident became a national sensation, we can't locate any contemporary books or pamphlets printed about this event - suggesting its only printed contemporary record exists in the ephemeral newspaper printings.

This 4 page issue also includes the front-page printing of the "Act for the Apportionment of Representatives among Several States [For the House of the Representatives]", signed in type by Jefferson.
