Description
Jimmy Carter: Tribute China and House of Representatives Ashtray. A total of 5 pieces are in this lot. Each of the four china +pieces feature a "Carter Green" border outlined by a star-studded gold outer band with a Presidential Seal. The backs of the china bear the Lenox mark with the text "Exhibit Collection/ For/ Lenox, Inc./ The White House 1980." The plates measure 10.5", the saucer measures 6", and the cup measures 5" (including handle) x 2". The ashtray reads, "House of Representatives/ USA" in the center and has a diameter of 9.75" and height of 1.75".White House china collector, Set Charles Momjian, initiated a fund raising drive to order a service of White House china for President and Mrs. Carter. Ultimately, the 1980 Jimmy Carter china arrived too late for them to use before they left the White House in 1981. Since the Carter Project was privately funded, the Carter china was reserved and delivered to the Carter Presidential Library.
Condition: There is some chipping to the seal at the center of the ashtray. Traces of black marker can be seen on the bottom of the cup (not affecting the maker's mark). The bottoms of the saucer and the plate with the thinner green band have identifying numbers in marker, also not affecting the Lenox marks. The same plate has a sticker at the back reading, "Lenox/ President Carter/ Dinner Plate." The plate with the larger band of green has minor adhesive residue beneath the maker's mark.
