Description
Abraham Lincoln: Colorful Political Glass and Tin Parade Lantern. Fitted to be carried on a pole during nighttime parades and rallies, lanterns like this were widely used in the 1860s and beyond, though to a lesser extent. But, given their fragile nature, very few have survived. We know of perhaps two others for Lincoln, in private hands, the most desirable candidate of all. Glass panels, often of colored glass, were inserted into a tin frame and illuminated from within by a candle. Some had candidates' names or slogans painted directly on the glass, while others, like this one, had printed paper panels. The frame measures 5" x 5" x 7.5". The lantern is pictured in Arthur Schlesinger Jr.'s Running for President: The Candidates and Their Images 1789-1896. This item is formerly from the Janice and David Frent Collection, however, a similar example can also be found in the New York Historical Society.Condition: Quite nice overall, especially considering its fragile nature. There is some perimeter loss on the Lincoln, as shown, but this is inconsequential.
