Description

Thomas Nast: Original Sketch "Where Sublime Cleveland Draws The Line". Fantastic cartoon, on heavy stock paper, picturing President Cleveland with a disabled veteran on the left side, and a wealthy "Bond" holder at the right. The top caption reads "It Leads Us To A(nother) "Challenge" The Poor & The Rich U.S. Pension U.S. Bond holder". Cleveland is seen holding a document reading "Mexican Pensions". At the the bottom it reads "Wild And Reckless Pension Expenditure Which Overleaps The Bounds Of Grateful Patriotic Service And Prostitutes To Vicious Uses The People's Prompt And Generous Impulse To Aid Those Disabled In Their Country's Service". This likely pertains to Cleveland vetoing the Dependent Pension Bill, which would have given a military pension to anyone serving a minimum of ninety days in any war. He argues that the bill will only encourage fraudulent assertions. Measures 12.25" X 22". Nast has signed and dated the cartoon (1893) at the middle bottom.

Condition: Loss at edges, old mounting remnants on verso, presents well.
