Description
Harry S Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Twenty-Five Piece Service of Presidential Glass & China From the U.S.S. Williamsburg. A simply beautiful and exceedingly rare service of presidential china & stemware from the U.S.S. Williamsburg which served as the Presidential yacht for two presidents, Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. The U.S.S. Williamsburg was commissioned on October 7, 1941 as a gunboat in the U.S. Navy. She was fitted out with two 3-inch gun mounts, six .50 caliber Browning machine guns, two .30 caliber Lewis machine guns, two depth charge tracks with a crew of 81. During WWII she served as headquarters for communications personnel in Iceland and as transport vessel for VIP's. In November 1945 the Williamsburg was converted replacing the Potomac as a Presidential Yacht and in the following years served both President's Truman and Eisenhower. President Eisenhower made only one cruise in the Williamsburg before ordering her decommissioned on June 30, 1953. She later served as a research vessel at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, eventually transferred to Genoa, Italy as a luxury cruise ship. The ship was finally scrapped on January 19, 2016.The collection of Presidential china and stemware includes the following: Lenox China (1)-10.5" dinner plate, (2)- 9.125" salad plates, (2)-8.125" desert plates, (5)-4.75 Bouillon cups, (3)-5.5" saucers with (1)-3.5" tea cup, (2)-2.5" after dinner cups. Crystal Glass Stemware: (6)-5" tall wine glasses, (3)-3.75" cordials. Total 25-pieces. Accompanying the presidential china and stemware service are (4)-Christmas Dinner Menus from Camp David, plus (1)-19-page, 8" x 10.5" booklet titled, "The Presidential Yacht/USS Williamsburg AGC-369".
Condition: The condition of all pieces in the set is superb, without any chips or cracks. The china pieces are each marked on the base with the Lenox manufacturer's stamp. Paper items are near fine condition exhibiting minor toning.
