Description

Temperance: Large 1846 Cotton Broadside. 19" x 23" linen broadside printed in blue, titled "No License. A Question To Be Settled in the State of New York, 19th of May, 1846." Issued as an "Extra" by the Journal of the American Temperance Union of New York on March 25, 1846. It summarizes the cost of the liquor trade through taxes and degraded health. There are four vignettes, the most unusual being a cartoon showing a tavern owner and his cronies laughing at the burden placed on the poor farmer. It urges defeat of the ballot measure authorizing the issuance of liquor licenses.

Condition: A few scattered stains and folds, but generally excellent.
