General George S. Patton pauses during the Battle of Metz to write to a former Third Army soldier and send along the new insignia.

The letter reads, in full:

"My dear Mr. Simmons:

Thank you very much for your Christmas greeting card and also for enclosing your old Third Army insignia. I am taking the liberty of sending you one of our new Third Army insignias, which is, as you can see, almost identical with the old one.

With the Seasons greetings, I am,

Most sincerely,
G S Patton Jr."

The Third United States Army was first activated during World War I at Chaumont, France, on November 7, 1918 under the command of Major General Joseph T. Dickman. The unit was under the command of Patton during World War II, when they earned the nickname "Patton's Own." The "A" on the insignia indicates Army, and its placement within the red "O" signifies Army of Occupation.
