Description
[Martin Van Buren] Anti-Henry Clay Connecticut Broadside. 12" x 17.5" broadside titled "O. K. Oll for Kleveland 'And Against the Bloody Hand.'" It announces a Democratic meeting on March 7, 1844. This most unusual broadside takes the odd tact of commenting on the presidential candidates prior to their nomination. They guessed right on Clay (heading the "Federal Whig Ticket"), but blew it on the Democrats, as Richard Johnson, Martin Van Buren and Lewis Cass were all bypassed in favor of dark-horse James K. Polk. The presumptive Democratic candidate is favored over Clay ("Now we ask every candid citizen which of these tickets do you prefer. Can you vote for Henry Clay, with his 'bloody hand'-a mass of moral corruption. With principles worse, more dangerous if possible than his morals. You cannot." It also favors gubernatorial candidate Chauncey F. Cleveland (who lost) over Roger S. Baldwin. Five stanzas of anti-Clay doggerel appear below. Very good condition with normal folds. No minimum bid.
