Description

[WWI Era] Uncle Sam Recruitment Poster by James Montgomery Flagg. Offered here is a 1917 example, housed in a vibrant blue frame. The text reads, "I Want You/ For U.S. Army/ Nearest Recruiting Station." Flagg's name appears above the "You," and stately blue and red stripes act as a border along the edges. The sight size measures 29" x 39", with the overall size measuring 32" x 42.5".

This iconic poster is without question the most recognizable war propaganda poster ever created, reissued and re-purposed a multitude of times throughout the ages. Drawing inspiration from the 1916 Lord Kitchener poster published by David Allen & Sons, Flagg utilized the imagery of Lord Kitchener's forcefully pointed finger while modeling Uncle Sam on a self-portrait of himself. This image originally appeared on the July 6, 1916 cover of Leslie Magazine, for which Flagg worked as an illustrator. The original text read, "What are you doing for preparedness?," with the "I Want You" text not appearing until February 15, 1917.

Condition: The poster appears to have been professionally repaired, with barely visible fold lines where separation may have previously occurred. This includes a faint line that starts at the top edge down through part of Uncle Sam's face. The red color has minor fading, but the blue remains very bold. The poster has not been inspected outside of the frame.
