Description

[John Wilkes Booth]: Thomas A. Jones Book and Letter. John Wilkes Booth received some assistance during his flight from capture, but it was an ordeal which ended in his death at the hands of Boston Corbett. One individual who aided the fugitive was Thomas A. Jones. He provided a boat and ferried Booth and Herold across the river. We offer a rare copy of M-1126 written by Jones, titled: "J. Wilkes Booth: An Account of His Sojourn in Southern Maryland After the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, His Passage Across the Potomac, and His Death in Virginia." Chicago, Laird & Lee Publishers, 1893, 126pp. in gold-stamped maroon cloth. Printed on brittle, wood pulp stock. Some pages have come loose and been neatly reattached with tissue-paper tape. Generally, a fine copy, seldom offered. Sold together with the conclusion of an 1890 ALS to collector Al E. Fostell, reading: "I forgot to say that I furnished the means to get Booth across the river but will give it next time. T. A. Jones". Sold with transmittal envelope addressed to Fostell.
