Publisher's full blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt and stamped in blind, front decorated in blind; all edges trimmed; pictorial endpapers; original illustrated dust jacket. A bit of shelf wear to binding, particularly along bottom edge; spine ends slightly softened. Faint darkening with a bit of speckling to text block edges. Occasional, mostly marginal spots of foxing and soiling scattered throughout text block. Light toning and rubbing to exposed panels of jacket; some chipping at spine and flap fold ends, along edges of rear panel; barely perceptible archival repairs to a few short tears and larger chips; a bit of wear at folds, with a tiny hole at rear flap. Very nearly fine; jacket about near fine. Housed in custom black cloth chemise in black cloth-covered slipcase with gilt-stamped dark red leather spine labels. Bentley's first novel to feature gentleman detective Philip Trent. Basis for two silent films and a 1952 adaptation starring Michael Wilding, Margaret Lockwood, and Orson Welles. Uncommon in jacket. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.
