H. C. Bailey. Group of Three Holograph Manuscripts and a First Edition, comprising: "The Thistle Down" Holograph Manuscript. [London: circa 1939]. Original manuscript, eighteen numbered leaves with unnumbered cover sheet. Signed by Bailey on title-sheet. Nineteen letter-sized leaves, unlined (9 x 7 inches; 228 x 178 mm.). Text on rectos only. With a TLS from R. Percy Hodder-Williams of Hodder and Stoughton, soliciting Bailey for a story to be included in The Queen's Book of the Red Cross (London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1939). [Together with:] "Coming Back" Holograph Manuscript. [London: circa 1937?]. Original manuscript, ten numbered leaves (9 x 7 inches; 228 x 178 mm.). Text on rectos only. [And:] "Honour Among Thieves" Holograph Manuscript. [London: circa 1947]. Original manuscript, gathered in seven sections titled Part I-VII, of approximately 30-60 unnumbered leaves each, three with cover sheets signed by Bailey (10.125 x 8 inches; 259 x 203 mm.). Text on rectos only. Paper very softly dulled with age; all documents except for "Honour" with single horizontal crease running width of sheets; general wear from handling and small areas of rust-staining from brass fasteners and paperclips. "Honour" with a fair amount of rumpling and edge wear, including some tearing and a few cover sheets detached from their packets. Housed in custom red cloth chemise inside custom clamshell.[And:] Honour Among Thieves. London: MacDonald & Co., [1947]. First edition. Octavo. 221, [3] pages. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in silver and black with black ruling; all text block edges trimmed; original illustrated dust jacket. Spine ends very slightly rolled, with a trace amount of wear; barely perceptible wear at lower corners. Text block very faintly dulled, with some light foxing to edges; previous owner signature penciled at head of front free endpaper. Wear to edges of jacket, most pronounced at spine and flap fold ends, where there is a bit of nicking and creasing; light wear and soft creasing along folds; mild rubbing at front and rear panel. Fine book in a near fine jacket. Housed with manuscripts in custom red cloth clamshell, with red leather book label of Florence and Edward Kaye affixed to inside of lid.
