[R. Austin Freeman and Dr. John James Pitcairn]. Clifford Ashdown. The Adventures of Romney Pringle. London: Ward, Lock & Co., 1902. First edition. Octavo (7.625 x 5 inches; 194 x 125 mm.). 198, [2] pages. Frontispiece and three additional plates by Fred Pegram. Publisher's full red cloth; spine and front lettered in gilt; front with decorative stamping in white; all edges trimmed. Minor shelf wear at extremities of binding; backstrip faintly darkened; spine ends pushed; general mild to moderate rubbing, soiling and drip staining to cloth; some loss to white stamping at front board; corners slightly bumped with boards starting to peek through cloth. Normal age toning and light scuffing to edges of text block. A bit of foxing to endpapers; both hinges largely split but still sound; previous owner signature at front free endpaper; with purple stamp of "J. W. T. Morrison & Co. TRING" at front free endpaper, half-title, frontispiece and title-page; inscription on half-title: "Written by my friend, J. J. Pitcairn, M. R. C. S. whilst corp surgeon H. M. Prison Holloway." Normal yellowing throughout interior with occasional scattered spot-soiling, mostly marginal, throughout. Very good. Housed in custom black cloth chemise in black cloth slipcase with dark red leather spine labels, stamped in gilt. A very scarce title, with only one previous record in Rare Book Hub in this red binding. Originally appeared in Cassell's Magazine in 1902. Queen's Quorum 30.
