Description

USS Tawara 48-Star US Size 7 Ensign.
This flag was flown by the USS Tarawa (CV-40), a late-war Essex Class Carrier launched in May of 1945. The Tarawa, although constructed and launched during WWII, never saw combat.

She was the first of two ships to be named for the Battle of Tarawa, fought 20-23 November 1943, which took place at the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands. It was the first opposed amphibious landing in the Pacific Theatre. The USMC suffered heavy casualties as the Japanese fought almost to the last man. As the result of the lessons learned at Tarawa, the US Navy founded the Underwater Demolition Teams, the precursor of the current U.S. Navy Seals, to clear landing obstacles and, in future landings, the Marines would endeavor to outnumber the enemy defenders nearly 6 to 1. The seizure of Tarawa allowed Admiral Nimitz to complete the strategic Marshalls Campaign.

This is a wool 48-star US Navy Size 7 Ensign (approximately 57" X 112"). The flag has a white canvas roped header finished with a ring, lead line and snap (the snap is missing). The flag is marked "7" and "USS TARAWA".

This flag would be a welcome addition to a Naval Aviation, WWII Aircraft Carrier or general WWII collection.

USS Tarawa Awards: American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal.

Condition: The flag is used, worn, lightly soiled and otherwise intact save for some shipboard repairs on the upper and lower fly corners.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information, along with a 1952 letter of transmittal from the donor to the museum.

For those who did not receive a hard copy of the auction catalog, we present here the introductory comments and history of Dr. Rungee and his remarkable collection. If you scroll further, you will also find various contemporary newspaper articles, as well as a selection of the many letters of donation and transmittal which accompanied the collection and a categorization of the collection.
