    Description
Less than three months before the 1860 Presidential election, Lincoln writes to the Secretary of the Republican National Executive Committee asking about his prospects in New York and whether his presence at a Massachusetts horse show would "help, or hurt, our cause..."

Abraham Lincoln Autograph Letter Signed ("A. Lincoln").
Springfield, Illinois, August 14, 1860. One page, measuring 5.25" x
7.9", with detached bifolium leaf with secretarial docket "A.
Lincoln / Springfield / Aug. 14, 1860", written to Secretary of the
Republican National Executive Committee "George G. Fogg, Esq."Lincoln writes in full: "My dear Sir: According to a printed notice attached to a letter of Gov. Morgan, I suppose you have been at New York since the 23rd of July - 'How does it look now?' I am invited to a horse show at Springfield, Mass. Beginning, I believe, on the 4th of September. Would it help, or hurt, our cause, if I were to go? I am not itching to go, and seeking to be advised thereto. Yours very truly A. Lincoln."
As Douglas and other candidates campaigned, Lincoln gave no speeches and relied on the enthusiasm of the young Republican Party which produced and distributed campaign literature (posters, leaflets and newspaper editorials) which dwarfed the opposition. On November 6, 1860, Lincoln was elected the 16th President, and his victory was entirely due to his support from the North and West.
Lincoln supporter George Fogg served as Secretary of the Republican National Executive Committee was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago where Lincoln, a moderate former one-term Whig Representative from Illinois, won the nomination for President on May 18th. Once elected, Lincoln appointed Fogg as Minister Resident to Switzerland.
