Charles Dickens engraving signed during his celebrated reading tour of the United States in 1867 and 1868

Charles Dickens. Signed engraving ("Charles Dickens"). Dated in the author's hand, "Boston / Twenty Fourth February 1868."

The engraving measures 4 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches (sight) and is framed to an overall size of 10 5/8 x 13 7/8 inches.

Charles Dickens visited the United States from November 1867 and April 1868 for what was a highly anticipated and immensely successful reading tour. This would be Dickens' second visit to America. Over the course of five months, he performed a grueling schedule that included more than 70 readings in cities including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. The tour attracted large audiences and garnered significant attention, reflecting Dickens' immense popularity. Despite facing health challenges, Dickens' dynamic and theatrical readings captivated American audiences, solidifying his status as one of the most celebrated literary figures of his time. This would be the author's last visit to America; he died two years later at the age of 58.

Signed images of Dickens are scarce, this being only the third exemplar we have handled.

Condition: Gently toned, with light foxing along the bottom margin. Faint scattered stains, and a visible line along the bottom margin, possibly a repaired separation. Not examined out of the frame.
