Description
One of the most outstanding publications from the Doves Press in a very fine Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding
[Doves Press]. Robert Browning. Men and Women.
Hammersmith: Doves Press, 1908.2 volumes, 4to (231 x 163 mm). Printed in red and black and with calligraphic inscriptions in red ink on each colophon which reads: "Flourished by Edward Johnston May 1908 [-Nov. 1908]", the flourishes in red, green and blue. Full dark blue crushed morocco, sides with central gilt arabesques containing small onlays of green and red morocco, within wide ornamental rule and dotted borders, gilt-lettered on upper covers, spines in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt-lettered in two, a repeated richly gilt pattern in the rest, brown morocco gilt doublures with wide dark blue turn-ins repeating the outside border design, red silk lined endpapers, edges gilt, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, stamp-signed by the binder on upper turn-ins "Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe London. For the Torch Press." Housed in a blue buckram folding case.
One of 250 copies on paper, from an overall edition limited to 263. The volumes were printed by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson in collaboration with Emery Walker, but it is Edward Johnston's skill that makes this set so remarkable, flourished in colored inks and with his calligraphic signature at end of each volume, dated May and November 1908, respectively. Johnston taught calligraphy at the London County Council Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal College of Arts, counting Eric Gill, Graily Hewitt, Anna Simons and Jan van Krimpen amongst his pupils. "The prettiest and most colourful of the Doves Press books" (Tidcombe, p.56).
Condition: Minor wear to joints with a few tiny nicks; touch of rubbing to extremities.
