4to. Publisher's green cloth stamped in red and green, publisher's imprint on spine in plain, unserifed type stamped in red (Greene & Hanff binding B). Complete with 24 inserted plates, including illustrated title page and in-text illustrations by W.W. Denslow.

FIRST EDITION. Second state of text: page [2]: publisher's advertisement has no box; page 14: "low wait of..."; page 81: "pieces"; page [227]: "While The Woodman..."; the colophon is reset in 13 lines with no box. Second state of plates: title page verso with press-printed copyright notice; dark blue blots removed from the moon of plate facing page 34; red shading removed from horizon on plate facing page 92. Broken text appears on pages 100 and 186.

First editions of this title with both the text and plates in the second state are usually bound in binding variant C; unusually, the present copy is bound in binding B.

Condition: Recased with original illustrated endpapers laid down, binding possibly tightened. Spine a bit sunned, abrasion to front cover, lightly soiled, minor fraying to spine ends and corners. Mild toning to textblock.
