Description
Would have flown on Apollo 20.
Apollo LM-15 Lunar Module Descent Stage Mounting Bracket. This piece of hardware was rescued from the Apollo 20's LM-15 spacecraft while it was being broken down for scrapping, a 3" x 2.5" x 2" titanium bracket with a threaded, angled coupling out the back, 1.875" in diameter. On the flat side, the part number is printed in red: "LDW320M0522-LN/C" above a serial number of "3". There are various red inspector stamps showing flight readiness. In each corner is found a large close-tolerance bolt, HITI part number NAS1155v10, with what appears to be a silver-plated nut and washer(s). This was designed as a load bearing (leg deployment) item to be mounted along the hardened outer frame of the descent stage. In August 1965, at NASA's insistence, Grumman (and other contractors) initiated a SWIP (Super-Weight Improvement Program); they were offered a bonus of $1,000 for each ounce their engineers could safely shave off LM components. Note the milling away of the corners, and the milling of concave surfaces into the bracket's sides and under-carriage, a testimony to this important program. Excellent condition.
