Description

The first female pilot and first female commander of a Space Shuttle.

Eileen Collins' NASA Polo Shirt Worn While in Astronaut Training, Signed by her and from her Personal Collection. A size medium blue polo-style shirt bearing her 1990 NASA group nickname- the "Hairballs," her group number- VIII, and the number 90- representing their class year. Three icons were used to complete the numbers: an earth filling in the nine, a black cat filling in the zero, and a space shuttle flying away from the earth. The "unlucky" theme was discussed in the designing of an emblem for the group that prompted them to use the black cat; NASA later rejected this. The black cat reminded some of the astronauts of hairballs and thus the nickname was born. Collins piloted STS-63 and STS-84 and then went onto command STS-93 and STS-114. The shirt is autographed by Collins just above her embroidered name and she has written "1990" on the neck tag. Excellent condition.

This lot has been consigned by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. The proceeds will benefit this non-profit organization.
