Description
Gemini 10 Flown Parachute Cloth Fragment and Suspension Line Directly from the Collection of Mission Commander John Young, Certified and Signed. A white and orange 9.75" x 12.5" piece of nylon cloth removed from the 84 foot-diameter ringsail main landing parachute that brought Gemini 10 safely to a splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean on July 21, 1966, after forty-three Earth orbits. Included with this lot is a 31.5" length of the parachute's suspension line. An 11" x 8.5" photo of Gemini 10 at the point of splashdown, showing the deployed parachute, is also included. Excellent condition with wrinkles from storage. Rarely offered.The project to develop the Gemini parachute landing system took 2½ years to complete. One of its unique features was that it positioned the spacecraft to enter the water on the corner of the heat shield, eliminating the need for built-in shock absorption equipment.
At the top of the orange section of this parachute fragment, John Young has written: "Gemini X Parachute Cloth & Attached Suspension Line. John Young".
