Apollo 7 & 8 and Apollo 11: Presidential Dinner Invitations Presented to Mrs. Ed White II in 1968 and 1969, One Signed by Wernher von Braun and Several Others. A framed presentation, 15.25" x 25" overall, with four cards of approximately 6.25" x 4" presented on a green cloth mat. The top is an invitation for Mrs. White to a dinner at the White House on December 9, 1968, by "The President and Mrs. Johnson". Below and to the right is a blank card with signatures obtained that night (top to bottom): "Donald W. Douglas Jr." (1917-2004) (son of the founder of Douglas Aircraft Company); "Louise Mitchell" (wife of Ed Mitchell); "Wernher von Braun" (1912-1977); "Muriel Humphrey" (1912-1998) (wife of Vice President Hubert Humphrey): "Walt Cunningham"; "Patricia Collins" (wife of Michael Collins); "George M Low" (1926-1984) (Manager of the Apollo Spacecraft Program Office); "Ivy W. Draper"; and "D K Slayton" (1924-1993). At the bottom is an invitation to the "[D]inner honoring the Apollo 11 Astronauts" on August 13, 1969, from "The President and Mrs. Nixon". To its above left is the dinner menu for that evening. Very fine condition.

Included with this lot is an interesting color facsimile printout of eight typewritten pages of Lady Bird Johnson's diary for December 9, 1968, with much detail about the Apollo 7 & 8 honors dinner and its attendees. A few excerpts follow: "...And as always with us, Muriel and Hubert, who add immeasurably to any party... There were 23 astronauts and their wives... And there were the other two widows of astronauts... Mrs. Edward White who had spent the night here at the White House - that fantastic, unbelievable night after Lyndon had decorated him for being a part of the first team that had walked in space... And from Huntsville, that handsome, assured, Wernher con Braun... It was one of the dancingest nights at the White House..."
