Cased & Engraved James Purdey & Sons Sidelock Ejector Double Barrel Shotgun.Serial no. 26469 [receiver, barrels and fore-end], 20 gauge [2 3/4-inches], 26-inch barrels with concave rib and front bead sight. Single trigger. Right barrel marked J. PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE, SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON. ENGLAND. Blued finish barrels, lever and triggerguard. Case-hardened receiver, each side marked J. PURDEY & SONS. Also marked J. PURDEY & SONS / LONDON / ENGLAND bottom of receiver. Elaborately scroll and floral engraved receiver [with standing eagle motif], triggerguard, lever, upper tang and beavertail fore-end metal. Finely checkered walnut pistolgrip stock and beavertail fore-end with Anson-style release. Hard rubber buttplate. Length of pull: 14 1/2-inches. Weight: 6 pounds. Contained in original leather carrying case with red felt lining and JAMES PURDEY & SONS label. 2 J. Purdey 20 gauge snap caps included.
Condition: Fine. Retaining approximately 94-96% with scattered scuffs, scratches and fine mars. Minor loss to finish near lower tang near serial number. Stocks very good but most of the varnished is gone with light mars and scuffs present. Buttpad with some age wear and cracks. Action good. Breakdown tight. Bright bores. Case in fair condition, outside with heavy scuffs and fading, inside in very good condition.
