Description

Jefferson Davis Typed Letter Signed.

One page, 8.5" x 5.5"; Atlanta, Georgia; May 1, 1886. A letter to Mrs. Hugh Gwyn (née Jennie Buckner) thanking her for a letter received and adding: "Southern woman-hhod [sic] is always in the front ranks to do homage to that which is right." Signed, "Jefferson Davis."

Jennie Buckner was married to Major Hugh Garvin Gwyn, who served under John Hunt Morgan during the Civil War. She later married Henry Capers.

Condition: Heavy wear along the folds, with separations thereat in the margins. Light soiling and toning, with small amounts of loss at lower left well away from any text.

Provenance: Jennie Buckner Capers, by descent to our consignor.
