Civil War: Impressive Department of West Virginia Veterans' Medal Presented to 1st Lieutenant Abijah B. Farmer, 2nd Regiment West Virginia Cavalry.

A handsome and large medal comprised of a bronze planchet, 37 mm in diameter, with a patriotic scene on the obverse and seal of West Virginia captioned 1861 1865; the reverse reads PRESENTED BY THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA. The rim is stamped ABIJAH B. FARMER 1ST LIEUT. 2ND CAV. VOLS. The medal is suspended from a large Department of West Virginia corps badge in the form of an eagle made with two-piece German-silver frames and a blue wool center. Pinback.

Abijah Farmer enlisted on November 1, 1861 as a sergeant and mustered into "L" Company of the West Virginia 2nd Cavalry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of "C" Company on January 11, 1865.
