Description
Normandy Invasion Flag Flown Aboard the S.S. Charles Wilson Peale and the Uniform of Crewman Petty Officer Ralph H. Dunwoodie. 46 x 49-inch American flag with 48 stars, constructed of wool bunting. The sailcloth hoist bears faint traces of the Dettra Bulldog Bunting logo.The S.S. Charles Wilson Peale was a Liberty ship built in 1942. It participated in the Normandy invasion as a freighter hauling men, vehicles and supplies to the landing points. Petty Officer Ralph Dunwoodie served as a Signalman aboard the ship during the invasion. The ship landed supplies and men at Omaha Beach on June 7 and 8, 1944 and again at Utah Beach June 9, 1944. Mr. Dunwoodie's provenance indicates that the ship was slightly damaged on June 8, 1944 and that the damage ultimately necessitated repairs in the dry docks at Southampton, England. He states the ragged condition of the flag is the result of a severe storm that occurred about ten days after the invasion. It was part of Mr. Dunwoodie's duties to change out the flags on the ship so he took the tattered flag and brought it home after the war.
The flag is accompanied by Dunwoodie's blue wool Navy jumper and bell-bottom trousers. The jumper is marked inside "DUNWOODIE R.H." The jumper has his Signalman's Petty Officer rating sewn to the right sleeve and his medal ribbon bars on the upper right chest. The bars include the Navy Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and American Campaign Medal. The uniform comes with a letter of provenance from Mr. Dunwoodie that reads in full: "This uniform was with me on the S.S. Charles Wilson Peale during the landings on Omaha Beach, Normandy, 1944".
Condition: The flag is tattered from the storm that the ship endured about 10 days after the invasion and has an overall gray look due to weather and funnel smoke. The uniform is in excellent condition.
N.B. We are informed by an esteemed veteran that the medal ribbon bars are worn on the serviceman's left chest.
