Description
WWII Norwegian Flag Used by Royal Norwegian Forces in Scotland, From the Rungee Collection.Wool, multi-piece construction measuring approximately 40 x 58-inches. Hoist end marked by hand, in ink: "NORWAY "HNOMS STORD (G26) SCHNORHORST [sic] - NORMANDY." The other side of the hoist is stenciled PERMARIN 1 ½ and bears the label of the Oslo Flaggfabrikk. The flag is accompanied by a one-page typed letter on United States Foreign Service letterhead, dated December 1, 1947 to Dr. Clarence R. Rungee reading, in part: "This office was given your communication of 13 September 1947 in which you state that you would like to procure a Norwegian flag flown during the war. This has now been accomplished through the Army Museum in Oslo, and we are enclosing herewith the flag and a short statement from the Director of the Museum as to its use during the war." Also included is the one-page typed letter from the Norwegian Army Museum certifying the flag was "presented to "Veterans of foreign wars of United States" by the Army Museum, was used by the Royal Norwegian Forces in Scotland during the war 1940-1945." Neither letter makes mention of the annotations on the flag noting its service with the HNOMS Stord. The Stord played an important role in the sinking the German battles Scharnhorst as well as participating the D-Day landings. The flag is accompanied by Vexillological Inventory Form from the Flag Heritage Foundation.
