Description
British World War I Recruiting Poster, "Forward to Victory - Enlist Now," c. 1915A striking original British World War I propaganda poster, titled Forward to Victory - Enlist Now, depicting a cavalry officer charging forward on horseback, sword drawn, urging men to join the fight. The image, rendered in powerful realism and dramatic motion, embodies the patriotic fervor of early-war enlistment campaigns. Along the bottom margin, the printer's mark reads: David Allen & Sons Ltd., Harrow, Middlesex, one of the leading British lithographers of the period responsible for producing many iconic wartime posters. Measurements: Poster is 29 1/2-inches by 19-inches, with frame it is 31 1/4 x 20 1/2-inches.
This poster was part of Britain's intensive recruitment drive prior to the introduction of conscription in 1916. Such imagery appealed to ideals of courage, honor, and national duty, particularly emphasizing the romantic image of the cavalry and the promise of "victory through valor." The composition and style are characteristic of wartime art designed to inspire enlistment through emotional and heroic themes.
Condition: Very good overall as framed. The poster presents well with vivid color and strong definition. Not examined outside of frame. The gold-toned frame is in fine condition, complementing the artwork attractively. There is some buckling to the poster and some abrasions at the horses' legs and in a few spots to the right and left as well. A visually powerful and historically significant piece of WWI British propaganda art, ready for display.
