The USS Berkeley County was an LST-1-class tank landing ship laid down in July 2, 1943 and commissioned in October, 1943. She arrived at Plymouth, England on February 7, 1944 and engaged in training maneuvers off the southern coast of England. She was assigned to Flotilla 28 in May and placed under British operational control for the upcoming invasion of France. On June 6, 1944 she left Portsmouth loaded with British troops and vehicles before joining a convoy for Normandy. On the morning of June 7, 1944 she unloaded troops and cargo in the Green sector of Juno Beach. She then loaded casualties and returned to Portsmouth. On her next convoy run she encountered German E-Boats operating off Cherbourg and narrowly escaped being torpedoed. She continued to make routine operational trips to French ports and eventually returned to the U.S. in June, 1945. In all, she had made 74 Channel crossings in support of the invasion. The Berkeley County was decommissioned in June, 1946. She was recommissioned from 1950-1955 for service in the Atlantic Fleet. Finally the LST-279 was transferred to the Chinese Nationalist Navy where she served as ROCS Chung Chie (LST-218). Accompanied by a Flag Heritage Foundation Vexillological Inventory Form.
Condition: Scattered age staining with two additional small dark stains and minor holes. Very good.
