Description
Engraved and Gold Inlaid F. Weiland Over and Under Double Barrel Hammer Takedown Percussion Rifle, Nowotny Marked.Approximately .58 caliber, 25 1/2-inch Damascus barrels, top barrel marked in gold lettering F. WEILAND IN CASSEL. Dovetailed front sight with a German silver blade and a dovetailed notch rear sight with a folding leaf. Trigger for right barrel is a set trigger, but not the left. Two gold bands adorn the breech area. Engaging grip safety adorns the upper tang area that retracts the cross bars that prevents the hammers from reaching the nipples unless it is pressed [right one could use some adjusting]. Tang is engraved PATENT and also has a crown [nine points] with the letters EB. Right side of lockplate engraved NOWOTNY and IN WIEN of the left side along with hunting scene including a raised scene depicting a wild boar ad hunting dog underneath the frame. Checkering on the wrist with a cheekpiece on the left. An intricate wooden patch box with staghorn pieces is present on the right side containing a takedown wrench; appears to be used to remove the bolt on the bottom at the breech that sticks out slightly; the barrel then should dismount. Wooden ramrod with German silver and brass fittings present on the right. Please note: Friedrich Weiland was active in Cassel in the mid 1800s.
Condition: Good to very good; barrels with Damascus patterns present, frame and remaining parts with a grey patina. Faint but legible inlay on barrel. Wood, cleaned and refinished with handling wear and storage marks. Action good, bores ok.
