Description
One of just 111 flown on the first Space Shuttle mission.
Space Shuttle Columbia (STS-1) Flown Silver Robbins Medallion Directly from the Personal Collection of Astronaut Rusty Schweickart, Serial Number 107F, with Signed LOA. This 39mm sterling silver medal is one of only 111 flown aboard Columbia, on the first orbital test flight of the Space Shuttle, April 12-14, 1981, with crewmembers John Young and Robert Crippen. There were a total of 359 minted for this flight. The obverse features the mission insignia depicting the shuttle, and its orbit around the Earth with the ship's name and the surnames of the crew. The reverse includes the names of the crewmembers and the engraved dates. The serial number is on the rim along with the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. The recent end of the U.S. Space Shuttle program should increase collector interest for early and rare STS material such as this. Original case with numbered sticker on the bottom included. Excellent condition.Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Russell L. Schweickart" on his personal letterhead, stating: "I hereby certify that this STS 1 silver Robbins medallion, serial # 107F, was flown aboard the STS 1 mission in 1981. As a member of the astronaut office, I was permitted to purchase up to two Robbins medallions from each mission. This medallion has been part of my personal collection since the mission."
