Description
Fantastic "Moonlight Mission" 748th Bomb Squadron, 457th Bomb Group A-2 Flight Jacket.An incredible A-2 leather flight jacket issued to an unidentified crew member of "Moonlight Mission", a B-17G "Flying Fortress" bomber, aircraft number 43-38606 assigned to the 8th Air Force, 457th Bombardment Group, 749th Bomb Squadron. The russet-brown leather jacket bears the manufacturers' label of Bronco Manufacturing Company of New York and is marked size 38. The jacket is colorfully hand-painted on the front, back and sleeves. The reverse features the MOONLIGHT MISSION topless pinup girl in Hula skirt with lei wearing a U.S. Army Air Force Officer Cap under the full moon with blue background; the left chest is decorated with the 748th Bomb Squadron insignia with 35 silver painted mission bombs over on a blue background; the left pocket flap has a Belgian national flag and Japanese rising sun flag with a question mark on it; the right chest features the insignia of the 457th Bombardment Group with "Sally" painted above; the right pocket flap has the French national flag and a Nazi flag; the right shoulder has the squadron's "U" tail insignia; the left an Army Air Corps insignia. The aircraft went missing in action over Oranienburg on April 10, 1945. Five of her crew were taken prisoner; four were killed in action.
Condition: The jacket is in excellent, original condition, with functional CROWN zipper to front, two front pouch pockets, and original knitted waist with cuffs. The lining is also original. The body of both front pockets also bore art but it appears that paint was intentionally removed.
