Description
Historic Collection of San Francisco Police Memorabilia from Retired Officer Niles Driver; Including Badge, Handcuffs, Patrol Books & More.An outstanding and personal archive of San Francisco Police Department history, belonging to Officer Niles E. Driver, whose career spanned a pivotal era of the force. This collection includes a beautifully toned 7-point sterling badge marked RETIRED / SAN FRANCISCO / A486 / POLICE, crafted by Irvine & Jachens, S.F. Reverse bears the maker and maker's union mark: I.J.W.C. / No. 64 / Union Made within a circular motif featuring a sparkling diamond symbol and dated 7-15-47. Also featured are patented handcuffs engraved N.E. DRIVER [star] 792, with key present; an issued patrol whistle marked The Acme Thunderer; and a number of official duty documents, including: Police Patrol booklets, Fire Alarm Box Book, California Vehicle Code Manual and assorted duty-related directories and pamphlets. The grouping also includes a San Francisco Police Department shoulder patch [motto: Oro en Paz, Fierro en Guerra - Gold in Peace, Iron in War], along with multiple identification cards, ranging from Red Cross and Local Boards to Widows & Orphans' Association and a 1935 SFPD roster listing Officer Driver.
This collection offers a vivid window into the life and service of a San Francisco officer during the 1930s-1940s, a time when the city's police force was growing rapidly to meet the demands of a changing urban landscape.
Condition: As found and well preserved, with expected handling wear from years of active service. Papers exhibit creases, scuffs, and occasional tears. Badge displays an attractive, naturally aged patina. A rare and evocative group for collectors of law enforcement or San Francisco history.
