Description
Brass Spurs Identified to Wallace F. Randolph, U.S. 5th Light Artillery and Later Major General at the War Department. Brass with ½-inch rowels, 1 ¾-inch necks, and stationary studs. Brown leather straps with brass buckles. The inside yoke of each spur is lightly scratched "R". The spurs are accompanied by a contemporary note, in ink, written on a 5 x 2 ½-inch tag which reads on the obverse: "Major General Wallace F. Randolph USA / Spurs - / Used by him while on active / duty as Captain, Major, Lt. Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier General / and as / Major General Retired"; and on the reverse side: "Horse ridden / by General Randolph / "George" / "Sedgmak" / "Pat" / "Warlock" (Indian Pony)".Wallace F. Randolph (1841-1910) enlisted in Philadelphia as a private on April 25, 1861. He served for a brief time in "F" Company of the 17th Pennsylvania but was soon commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. 5th Light Artillery. He rose quickly through the ranks to Captain but was captured at Winchester, Virginia on May 15, 1863. He escaped from the infamous Libby Prison in February of 1864. He ended the war as a brevet Major and reverted back to the rank of Captain after the war. He served during the Spanish-American War, was Chief of Artillery and served at the War Department until he retired in 1904 as a Major General.
