Description
French Sword Cane in the Japonaiserie Style.Overall length is 34 1/2-inches. 27-inch diamond shaped double edge blade with safety latch. The blade has its original bluing and etching on it. Repoussé knob, [2-inch pommel] in the Japonaiserie style with locust, frog and crab characters surrounding the pommel, flying insect on cap, a style in art reflecting Japanese qualities or motifs. Brown lacquered wooden case in the form of a bamboo stalk. Metal ferule tip missing. This is a slash and thrust weapon relying on the cage shaft as a parrying stick. Note: There are many books written on fencing and also the use of a weapon like this. The weapon has a pretty good balance, if used correctly, the release catch can act as a blade catcher or breaker. Inexperienced knife and sword fighters are not aware of the maneuvers required to avoid injury.
Condition: Overall in very good to fine condition. Blade fine to excellent with wear / pitting. Pommel with tarnish, a few dents. Case shows a number of length-wise drying cracks but is stable and complete, apart from missing ferule tip.
