Description
Apollo 17 Lunar Module Flown "Lighting" Schematic Originally from the Personal Collection of Mission Commander Gene Cernan, Signed and Certified, with Signed LOA. A 37" x 10.5" pull-out chart titled and tabbed "1 Lighting" from the LM Systems Data book, folds down to 8.5" x 10.5". Signed at upper right: "Flown to the Lunar Surface/ in the Valley of Taurus Littrow/ Gene Cernan/ Apollo XVII". Cernan gives detailed information about this chart in his LOA (see below). Note that the illustration at left shows the arm rests on the LM, one of which is available in this auction. Very displayable. Excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.Included with this lot is a signed and illustrated Letter of Authenticity on his letterhead stating, in full: "I certify that this schematic drawing from Apollo 17 was flown to the surface of the moon aboard the Lunar Module Challenger, when we landed in the valley of Taurus-Littrow on December 11, 1972, the last lunar landing of Apollo. It was part of the LM Systems Data manual we carried along for troubleshooting and reference for the many electrical and mechanical systems that made up our lunar landing spacecraft, spacesuits and Lunar Roving Vehicle. The LM Systems Data manual is made up of 38 of these detailed schematic drawings, all index tabbed by subject and accordion-folded to fit into the manual, which is a simple three ringed, loose-leaf booklet. The manual was manifested as part # SKB32100127-385 and serial # 1001. This is the LIGHTING schematic of the LM Systems Data manual, which was referred to frequently in training, although this actual flight manual was pristine and nearly untouched. The drawing combines locations of cabin lights, switches and lamps, along with instrument illumination, outside tracking light and automated window cameras. I was the only NASA astronaut to have flown twice in the LM, as LMP on Apollo 10 and as CDR on Apollo 17, so I was intimately familiar with the lander, and all it's systems, although our Apollo 17 LM Challenger was much more advanced than Apollo 10's Snoopy, including the lunar rover, and EVA spacesuits."
