Springfield Model 1873 carbines with serial numbers in the approximate range of under 43,700 are known as "Custer Range" guns, produced at Springfield Armory in late 1873 through early 1874. A carbine numbered in the 16,000 range falls within this group, representing the same production period as those issued to the U.S. 7th Cavalry under Lt. Col. George A. Custer. While many were distributed to other cavalry units, these early Trapdoor carbines remain highly significant examples from the era of the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
According to consignor notes, this carbine was acquired from the Jim Gordon Museum in Santa Fe, NM. Was on display at his museum located near the Battlefield Glorieta Pass. The Jim Gordon Museum, also called Casa Escuela, is a private museum near Glorieta Pass southeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It features Jim Gordon's extensive collection of historic firearms, Civil War artifacts, and Western memorabilia, and can usually be visited by appointment or special tour.
Condition: Good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with noticeable age, handling wear and pitting. Heavy scuffs and dings present to wood. Action functions. Strong bore.
