Description
U.S. Cavalry McClellan Saddle Model 1904, W.F.A. Arsenal Marked, with Accessories. An original U.S. Cavalry McClellan Saddle, Model 1904, marked W.F.A. Arsenal, complete with matching saddle bags, additional straps, and bits as shown. The saddle retains its distinctive rawhide-covered tree and is fitted with its 12-inch bare hide seat, constructed in natural finish with dark brown leather side panels and skirts. Brass maker's plates are present, including one reading "C. PRUDDEN, MAKER, PHILADA" and another denoting "12 INCH SEAT."
The Model 1904 McClellan represented the culmination of decades of refinement following the original 1859 pattern designed under General George B. McClellan. Adopted formally in 1904, this version remained the standard issue for U.S. cavalry and mounted troops through World War I, valued for its light weight, comfort, and durability in the field. It served as the backbone of mounted equipment during America's last era of horse cavalry. This example displays all the characteristic features of arsenal production, including the deep seat, reinforced rigging rings, and integral field gear attachments. The included leather saddle bags and bridle and bit components make this a complete and desirable cavalry field configuration, representative of early 20th-century U.S. mounted service.
Condition: Good overall. The leather surfaces exhibit wear, creasing, and patina consistent with age and field use. The stitching and straps remain largely intact, though some cracking and dryness are visible. Metal fittings show oxidation and age toning, while the hide seat retains its shape with expected darkening. The saddle presents an authentic, service-worn appearance and remains a strong and visually appealing example of a genuine U.S. Arsenal-issued Model 1904 Cavalry Saddle, complete with period accessories.
