Description

Prussian Model 1843 Enlisted Man's Garde du Corp Helmet. The 1843 pattern, much scarcer than later variants, featured a significantly taller body. This example measures 14 ¼-inches to the top of the eagle's crown. Constructed of tombac, the helmet features a wide, two-step visor and segmented "lobster tail" rear neck guard. Remnants of the green morocco leather remain on the underside of the visor. The base of the body, visor and neck guard are trimmed in ¼-inch wide nickel-silver edging. The nickeled 5 x 5-inch "SUUM CUIQUE" helmet plate has four wire mounting loops soldered on the reverse and affixed to the helmet with leather thongs. The helmet body has four corresponding rectangular slots to accommodate the plate. The leather-backed tombac, slightly convex chin scales are mounted via domed screws through simple enlisted-style rosettes. The helmet is complete with a replaced single 3 ¼-inch in diameter black-and-white Prussian state cockade. The silvered-eagle is mounted to an oval base and affixed to the helmet body via a threaded post and wing nut. The crown of the helmet has four additional holes for mounting a standard spike when not in parade use. A 4-inch spike is included though the holes in the oval base don't match up with those in the body. The black leather liner is a modern replacement. No visible maker or size markings.

Condition: Very good. The body and visors have scattered shallow dents with some old repairs to the nickel-silver trim. The eagle is a later replacement as is the cockade. From the collection of J. T. Hamrick, M.D.
