Description

Outstanding Confederate Staff Officers' Sword and Scabbard Made by the Confederate States Armory Kenansville, North Carolina.
The Confederate States Armory produced a wide variety of edged weapons from 1862-1865 and was a large private enterprise operated by Louis Froelich. This is one of the most, if not the most striking of all the Confederate officers' swords. The brass guard, which appears to be sheet brass but is actually cast, incorporates the cutout letters CSA. The sword exhibits a distinctive brass grip ferrule and pommel. The guard bears the Roman numeral "XX" at the edge of the quillon. Leather wrapped grip grooved to accept the single strand steel wire wrap. This example does not have the original leather washer. The slightly curved blade is un-etched and measures 29 ¾-inches with rather crude single unstopped fullers. Typical Confederate iron body scabbard with crude heavy seam, wide brass lipped throat (also etched "XX") and brass ring mounts with iron rings. A very nice example of this extremely desirable Confederate officers' sword and scabbard.

Condition: Very good. All brass with nice patina. Grip covering shows wear but about 75% intact and very sound, wire wrap tight. Blade clean with a smooth patina, no nicks or sharpening. Scabbard with deep dark untouched patina and some scattered surface rust and an occasional trivial dent. Crude seam work as is frequently typical. Brass mounts with dark untouched patina.
