Description

British Naval Officer Silhouette on Glass.
4.5" x 6.5" portrait captioned "Capt. Henry Whitby, R.N." Highlights in blue & gold on convex glass. Some chipping to caption panel. Framed to an overall size of 5.75" x 7.75". Whitby (1781-1812) had an exemplary, yet short career which began at age 13 in 1794. He is perhaps best known as the defendant in a court-martial for the death of an American sailor off New York City that occurred when Whitby's ship fired an errant shot. President Jefferson demanded his arrest, mostly as a pro-forma gesture. He was acquitted of charges at the trial held in Portsmouth Harbor on April 16, 1807.
