Inscribed New York State Militia Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver.

Serial no. 156936 [barrel, frame, triggerguard, cylinder and butt], wedge stamped 56936, .31 caliber, 4-inch octagonal barrel with fixed front sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. Top of barrel marked with two-line: ADDRESS SAML COLT / NEW-YORK CITY. The left side of frame marked COLT'S / PATENT along with a "V" on trigger bow. Etched cylinder scene. Silver-plated brass gripstraps present. Varnished walnut one-piece grip. Backstrap inscribed W.W. BAILEY TO FRANKLIN RITTER. / QUARTER MASTER 74 REGIMENT N.Y.S.M. and grip butt inscribed APRIL 29, 1861. The New York State Militia, known in various periods of its history as the New York Militia or the New York National Guard, has played a significant role in American military and civil history. Many militia regiments were activated and served as volunteer regiments in the Union Army. These units were often mustered for short-term service but were critical in filling the Union's need for troops.
This gun was manufactured in 1859 according to records.

Condition: Very good. Retaining 10-15% bluing with balance being a smooth grey patina with light scattered signs of handling wear and fine pitting. Faint traces of case-colors to frame, more pronounced on loading lever and hammer. Grips are fine with minor scratches and faint dings present to wood. Action good. Strong bore.
