Scarce Remington-Keene Frontier Model Rifle Marked U.S.I.D.
301.Unserialized, .45-70 caliber, 25-inch barrel with fixed front sight and adjustable rear ladder sight. Blued finish. Top of breech marked E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION N.Y. / PAT. FEB'Y 24 MCH 17, 1874 JAN, 18 / SEPT. 26, 1876. MCH. 20. JULY 31. 77. Left side of receiver stamped: U.S.I.D. 301. Case-hardened hammer and trigger. H.N. (Henry Nettleton) inspector marks to left side of barrel and receiver. Smooth walnut straight stock with sling swivels. Case-hardened carbine buttplate.
The Remington-Keene is an early bolt-action repeating rifle, designed by John W. Keene and manufactured by the Remington Arms Company in the late 19th century. This rifle is notable for its unique design elements and its role in the evolution of bolt-action firearms.
Please note: Research indicates these U.S.I.D. marked rifles were purchased by the US Department of the Interior for use by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Tribal Police, see Flayderman's Guide 5E-116].
Condition: Very good. Retaining approximately 70-80% finish with some thinning to relief edges, handling wear and fine patches of pitting. Scattered dings and scuffs present to wood. Action good. Strong bore.
