Apollo 11 Crew-Signed Insurance Cover with Mission Insignia Cachet. A philatelic cover, 6.5" x 3.625", with the "Apollo 8" 6¢ stamp (Scott #1371) affixed, bearing a pictorial machine from Kennedy Space Center dated July 16, 1969, the day that Apollo 11 was launched. The cachet is a 3" diameter color mission insignia with no added text. To the right are the signatures: "M Collins", "Neil Armstrong", and "Buzz Aldrin", in two shades of blue felt tip. This is the first time Heritage has offered this particular type of cover. Excellent condition.Apollo 11 was the first flight in which insurance covers were utilized. They were produced for the crew to sign together before their launch to the moon, and then leave behind with their families as a form of insurance that could be sold should they fail to return. Some of the covers were postmarked at the Cape on July 16, 1969, the day of launch, with the remainder postmarked in Houston on July 20, 1969, the day of the lunar landing. There are three known types of Apollo 11 insurance covers. Please view the following two lots for the other two types; all three versions are rarely offered side by side.
