Smith (Poultney & Trimble) Percussion Breech-Loading Civil War Saddle Ring Carbine.

Serial no. 677 [barrel and receiver], .50 caliber, 21 1/2-inch octagonal and round barrel, with fixed front sight and rear ladder sight. Blued finish and case-hardened finish. Left side of the receiver marked: ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A. Saddle ring. B stamped to left side of barrel. Smooth walnut straight stock and fore-end. Metal carbine butt. Together with photocopy of Civil War Weapons Search stating this Smith Carbine #677 was a "Range Match" to Civil War Regiment; 1st. Connecticut Vol. Cavalry / 1863. According to their records definition, "a Range Match indicates that the weapon's serial number is within the serial number range of identical weapons issued to the CW Regiment (s) listed. Therefore, a probability exits that the piece was issued to a soldier in the regiment (s) listed". According to research included, 1st. Connecticut saw a lot of action during the Civil War, four Congressional Medals of Honor went to troops from the 1st. Connecticut Volunteer Cavalry [out of twelve overall to Connecticut troops from all branches].

Condition: Good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina with noticeable areas of handling wear, age and pitting. Scattered scuffs, dings and bruising present to wood. Action good. Lightly pitted bore.
