Description
Pictured in George D. Moller's book, American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II.
Virginia Manufactory Type I Flintlock Musket Dated 1803 with
Regimental Markings.Unserialized, .69 caliber, 44-inch round barrel marked near breech circle P over V, also [cannon stamping] 74, VA REGT HANOVER. Lockplate marked VIRGINIA / MANUFACTORY forward of flintlock and RICHMOND / 1803 [curved] rear of flintlock. Iron furniture. The number 66 appears in numerous places. Other markings found in the stock are WA, carved to the left of the trigger and a JM carving on the left side of the buttstock. The mark/initials GDM for the George D. Moller Collection are visible near the toe of the buttstock. Gun is fitted with a sling marked WATERVLIET / ARSENAL.
Please note: Gun is pictured and detailed in George D. Moller's book, American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II on pages 280, 281 and 283. Research shows 2,032 were manufactured in 1803 [year on lock].
Provenance: The George Moller Collection
Condition: Good to very good. Barrel and furniture with a moderate mottled grey patina and surface spots throughout. Wood stock fair with some losses. Numerous bumps, bruising and scattered cracks concentrating to the rear portion, apart from separation and loss to upper portion near barrel and ramrod. One stands out from buttplate forward on left. Also fine and moderate scuffs and nicks present. Action crisp, bore dark as expected. Sling with wear and cracks, but complete with edge wear. Arsenal marking crisp. Collection of a Southern Gentleman.
