Description

Nathan Bedford Forrest: Carte de Visite.

Having started his military career with little to no formal training, Forrest rose through the ranks of the Confederate Army, reaching the title of major general on December 4, 1863. His military brilliance particularly shone in 1864, when in Okolona, Mississippi, he fought back a Union cavalry column of sixty-six hundred men that were considered by W. Sooy Smith to have been the best-outfitted cavalry in the world. An example of this portrait can be seen on page 143 of The Confederate General: Volume 2, edited by William C. Davis and Julie Hoffman. This lot includes a copy of the original notarized letter of provenance, the signature of John G. Montague of Gentleman's Antiques appearing at the bottom, stating the item was purchased "...directly from the granddaughters of General N.B. Forrest in their home...in Memphis, Tennessee." The CDV offered is fourth on the list. The piece has wonderful contrast and is one of the few images of Forrest where he is not looking at the lens. His name appears printed on the front of the card below his portrait. Some toning and light foxing are present in addition to a minor dent in the paper at the bottom edge, mainly detectable from the back. Overall, this CDV is in great condition with plenty of details visible via wonderful contrast. The B.G. Chip Newman Collection
