Description

Civil War Leather Haversack Identified to the 11th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment.

A private purchase leather haversack measuring approximately 13 1/2 x 9 1/2-inches adorned on the front flap with ¾-inch high metal numbers and letters to form "11th REGT / NH" though the "1", "E" and "H" characters are missing. The haversack retains all buckles, buttons and closing straps, including the cotton-twill carrying strap.

The 11th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment, organized in September 1862 under Colonel Walter Harriman, saw hard service with the 9th Army Corps. It fought first at Fredericksburg, suffering heavy losses in the assaults on Marye's Heights, then campaigned in East Tennessee at Campbell's Station and Knoxville. Returning east in 1864, the regiment battled through the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor before enduring the long Siege of Petersburg. Present during the final pursuit of Lee's army, the 11th was mustered out in June 1865, having fought in nearly every major campaign of the 9th Corps.

Condition: The bag has seen honest use and displays wear along the edges but remains supple and in about very good condition.
