Description
Colt Single Action Army Revolver Purportedly Belonging to Texas Lawman and Rancher William Houston Pearce.Serial no. 91496, .45 caliber, 7 ½-inch round barrel with single line Hartford address . Blued finish. Walnut grips. Accompanied by a Colt factory letter indicating the revolver was shipped to Simmons Hardware Company, St. Louis, Missouri on May 21, 1883. Comes in a later wooden case with red velvet lined compartments.
William Houston Pearce (1844-1926) was born in Tennessee. During the Civil War he served as a sergeant in the 3rd Tennessee Infantry. Sometime after the war he came to Texas on a boat via Galveston. He joined a group known as the "Indian Fighters" whose members became Texas Rangers. Pearce served as a private in Company B, the "Frontier Battalion" of the Texas Rangers from September 1, 1875 to November 30, 1875. He purchased this revolver in Ft. Worth, Texas in 1884, and moved to West Texas in 1892 to take up ranching. The revolver is accompanied by a three-ring notebook which includes much research information gathered by the previous owner, including the Colt factory letter.
Provenance: Roger and Linda Carpenter Collection.
Condition: Very good. Retaining scant traces of the original blue, the remainder with a smooth gray patina. Crisp action. Dark bore with some light pitting. Grips worn with honest use that's commensurate with the wear on the rest of the pistol. Wooden box with some scuffs and scratches, otherwise in very good condition.
