Company C, 8th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry.

Civil War Carried Colt Model 1860 Army Percussion Revolver with Family Provenance and Factory Letter.

Serial no. 47115 [barrel, frame, triggerguard, cylinder and butt], .44 caliber, 8-inch barrel with one-line barrel address and fixed front sight. Blued and case-hardened finish. COLTS / PATENT stamped to left side of frame. Brass triggerguard. One-piece walnut grip. Manufactured in 1862. Note: Revolver was carried by Jacob W. Miller, Private in Company C, 8th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry. He was enrolled on September 25, 1863, until the unit disbanded on July 20, 1865.

Paperwork included; 1) Notarized letter included by the family discusses the timeline of the revolver. 2) A typed statement from Robert Jacob Terrel [not notarized], living and at the age of 84 [on 4-2-14], the son of Oneita who was the sister of Robert W. Miller; stating how the Civil War veteran obtained this revolver...."at an evening meal whereas he and his fellow Troopers were enjoying a supper of fired chicken (stolen from a nearby farm) when a Union Officer entered the encampment on horseback and proceeded to confiscate the stolen chickens, JACOB slipped to the back side of the Officers horse and removed the revolver from his saddle bags. He had his sister hide the gun under her mattress upon returning home after the war for fear of prosecution."
3) Also included is a handwritten piece of paper stating; "This pistol belongs to your great grandfather Jacob W. Miller (1839-1933) who fought in the Civil War Company C, Eighth Regiment of Indiana Veteran Cav. Volunteers." 4) Factory letter dated April 9, 2018; Confirms specifications and shows the revolver was sold to the United States War Department and shipped to Lt. Col. G.D. Ramsey at the Washington Arsenal on June 24, 1862 in a shipment of 1,000. 5) Other paperwork includes photocopies and info related to Jacob Miller and his time in service.

Condition: Very good. Finish primarily a dark grey patina, with signs of wear and pitting throughout. Heavy dings and bruises to grip. Noticeable wood missing to base of grips [possibly battlefield made for a makeshift lanyard]. Loss to heel on both sides. Action good. Pitted bore.
